Dealing With A Break Up – Step 1: Let That Door Close

Dealing With A Break Up – Step 1: Let That Door Close

I was listening to Adele’s Someone Like You .  I love Adele. Her voice, and what she so bravely shares with the world. Those innermost fears, hurts, anguish that everyone has felt at some time, she puts a voice to.

But what I thought this time, while listening to this song, was that so often a relationship or door closes, and we are so stubborn, so lost, so mournful of that door being closed that we rail against the door.  We cry at the door.  We pound our fists against the door.  We try to trick and cudgel the door.  And when that doesn’t work, we lay our head against it exhausted and spent.  And only then, accidentally, do we pause, look at our surroundings and feel a breeze coming from an open door at the other side of the room. One that had been open all along. But we were so certain, so sure that THIS door – this closed, crappy door was the ONLY way.

And so when I hear this song – I want to reach out to Adele and tell her, “Sweetie – turn around. Look at the open door behind you. It’s filled with opportunity and potential. And hopefully, a guy who won’t (if press rumors are true) sell you out, or cheat on you, or not cherish the amazing women you are.  But you have to turn around to see it.”  (I realize she has since found love, and that’s awesome – but this was just what I felt listening to her words.)

So for all my single friends, for anyone railing against the door that is their last relationship.  Pause – just for a moment.  And look around.  See if there is another door, much more worthy of you than that one you are so sure is it!

I say this from a place of love. And also from a place of knowing. Because I too have stood by the closed door. So sure if I just waited, just pounded loud enough that damn thing would open again.  And only when I got tired, and my fists were bruised and my heart had had enough, did I pause, and realize there was in fact another, beautiful door open for me.  If only I could let go of where I was standing, and follow that cool breeze into the light.

Have you ever felt this way?  What made you stop and look around?
